Career Day Returns to the Dolan Center

By: Oonagh Yaged '25

Gracing the halls of Notre Dame annually for more than thirty years, Career Day has been a constant opportunity for Chez Nous Sisters to learn about various career paths. The event, which originally started as a panel, has now evolved into a fair format that is comparable to the typical college fair. Career Day took place on February 10th. This year Notre Dame hosted more than forty participants from many different professions. These individuals represented many supporters of Notre Dame, from Alumnae, to parents past and current, to benefactors of our community.

This year the Career Fair returned to its in-person format here on West 13th Street. Ms. Brilliant, Communications and Outreach Coordinator, and Ms. Keefe, Major Gifts Officer, organized the Fair. “The pandemic forced us to have panels by Zoom for the past several years,” Ms. Brilliant stated. “Now, Ms. Keefe and I are thrilled to return to the in-person fair format.” For most Chez Nous Sisters, this will be their first career day in person.

Although it is exciting to have a break from classroom learning, Career Day is a serious event and a great opportunity for students to make vital professional connections. “[It] give[s] students practice in dressing professionally and making contact with professionals doing the work they may be interested in for the future,” Ms. Brilliant said. Students aren’t the only ones who excitedly anticipate this event. “My hope is to share how much I enjoy my job with the students of Notre Dame so they can consider publishing as a career,” Jon Yaged (P ‘25), CEO of Macmillan Publishers stated.

The layout of this fair isn’t the only thing that has changed. “The original idea was to focus on the STEM fields, as a way of promoting them,” said Ms. Brilliant. “But, they had so many volunteers from many different categories that they decided to broaden their plan.” This turned out to be very beneficial, as students have varied interests, many of which were represented. As Mr. Yaged stated, “The career fair will enable students to learn about a variety of different industries and the different jobs available in each.”

Overall, the Career Fair is a positive experience for students and participants alike. Hopefully, this encourages you to reach out to connections you made at the Fair or to showcase your career at a future fair.

This opportunity was one participants wished they had while they were students. When asked if he had had a career fair while he was in high school, Mr. Yaged said, “No, and I wish I did.”
