Chez Nous at the Climate Strike

By Ana Gavilanes '21

We are striking because we have done our homework, and they have not."- Greta Thunberg

On September 20, 2019 I felt honored to be a member of our ND Community as about 30 of our Chez Nous sisters --- along with Faculty and some Xavier students --- took part in the Global Climate Strike to address the failures and negligence of our world leaders regarding climate change.

In the most quintessential form of our school spirit, we rallied together through the entirety of the march, supporting each other by starting cheers, offering each other water on the hot day, and sharing our posters. We were also able to branch off from our small and tightly-knit community to experience the masses of other young NYC students and our brother school, Xavier. My personal favorite aspect of the march was seeing the clever slogans and forms of protests shown by thousands of students and New Yorkers of all ages. The march was indeed a fun, enlightening and inspiring experience that was graciously brought to us by our beloved faculty and enhanced by the spirit of Chez Nous.

I am proud to report that we have, indeed, “done our homework,'' as the pivotal 16-year old activist Greta Thunberg said. Here at ND, we are all certainly aware of the immense lack of Climate Justice worldwide. However, we are also extremely lucky to be embraced by a community dedicated to creating a better future for our planet, with the help of wonderful student initiatives, such as the Climate Change Club and STAND, and by listening to one another on why climate justice matters.
