Clubs Begin at Chez Nous

By Megan Groo '25

With the beginning of the 2021 school year, so begins the new year for ND clubs. Some opening clubs this year include Foodie Club, led by Ms. Hassan, Club Rosary led by Ms. Angioletti, the Creative Writing Club led by Ms. Kane, and many more.

Foodie Club, an involved and fun community, plans recipes and ingredients so students can bake or cook together on Zoom. The club started last year and has had lots of success since then. Foodie Club’s student leaders are Kat Chang ‘22 and Olivia Richards ‘22. In the first meeting, the club cooked a chicken and broccoli stir-fry with soy sauce, mirin, rice vinegar, garlic, ginger, and sesame oil over rice. Kat Chang, a student leader for Foodie Club, said that goals for the club were “to teach ND students and faculty culinary skills and dishes. Our focus has been different depending on the time of year. For example, the theme last year was ‘around the world’ so we made kofta and hummus.” For future meetings, they are “excited to spend time cooking on Zoom! It is a great time to unwind while also learning something new.” For interested students, the Google Classroom code is OOEVYG7.

Another opening club is Club Rosary, hosted by Ms. Angioletti. Club Rosary is a chance for students to relax and pray the rosary. Though the rosary is a Catholic tradition, everyone is welcome to join and participate to their own comfort level. The club meets weekly on Thursdays at 3:10 pm.

ND Cares, a club working on donating time, resources, and effort to charitable causes, had their first meeting this year to orchestrate and schedule their goals. ND Cares has been around for over a decade, but participation is still high and the club is going strong. Originally, the club had been established to fundraise for victims and survivors of cancer, but it has since grown into a charitable organization focused on involving and engaging students in charity work, rather than simply fundraising.

Ms. Crosson, the moderator for ND Cares, said the club hoped to “support the New York City community, but also the global community,” and to be “hands-on... and to be actively helping the community.” Despite starting school only a few weeks ago, the club has already planned their project for October. They fundraised to put together care packages with toiletries and food and delivered them to the homeless population in the neighborhood. To join this club, the Google Classroom code is FHNGDQG.

Though the Creative Writing club started a few years ago, they did not have as much participation as this year. Shania Marte ‘23, Hailey Quiller ‘23, and Alais Springer-Elkerson ‘23 are the club’s student leaders, with Ms. Kane and Mr. Lejano as moderators--both with Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing! The first meeting was held on Monday, October 25th. Ms. Kane, a moderator, said the club hopes to inspire members “to explore their writing voices and share their work with each other in a workshop style environment.” She hopes to publish their work at the end of the year and share it with the ND community. “Everyone has a story to tell--at least one!--and we want to encourage them to put pen to paper!” To join this club, join the Creative Writing Google Classroom with the code XDVRBB3.

The ND community hosts a wide variety of clubs and activities, all of which are available to the student body. These clubs are great opportunities to learn more about specific topics, meet new people, and have fun.
