The Donut Ride 2023

By: Daphne Tsarnas '26

ND students are always looking to involve themselves in events and activities that benefit the community. Consequently, when Ms. Wakabayashi sent an email to the student body asking for volunteers for a commun

ity service opportunity dubbed The Donut Ride, girls of all ages were eager to sign up.

The Donut Ride is an annual cycling trip that spans throughout Brooklyn and Manhattan. The ride is arranged by a non-profit organization called InTandem that aims to provide bicycle programs targeted specifically at people who are blind, have low vision, or cannot ride independently due to other disabilities. Enthusiastic students were tasked with a variety of jobs, including registering bicycle riders at the Central Park Boathouse or handing out donuts from local businesses to riders at their pit stops across New York City.

A few sophomores, including myself, picked up donuts from The Doughnut Project in the West Village and awaited riders at Pier 45 on the West Side Highway, not far from school. We were able to interact with cyclers of all backgrounds and age groups in addition to tasting the donuts! It put a smile on our faces to be able to help out and meet such interesting people.

After the riders left our station and continued their ride, we found ourselves with multiple boxes of donuts remaining.

We decided to walk up and down the West Side Highway seeking to hand out the extra donuts and educate citizens on our notable cause. Not only did we give away every last donut, but we also raised even more money for InTandem from individuals who were fond of the cause and its motives.

The experience taught me and the other students who helped out how willing people are to support a benevolent cause and donate their money for the greater good. I have no doubt that when the event rolls around again next autumn that even more supporters of the cause will be recruited!
