Women's Sports Deserve Equal Hype

Friends, parents, and even teachers showed up at the ND girls senior soccer game to support them as they played The Mary Louis Academy. Teammates put together posters with pictures from the last four years in celebration of their seniors. As the sidelines were lined with Chez Nous’ green, navy, and pink, the support from members of the ND community encouraged the team to their victory, winning the game 1-0.
The following weekend, our volleyball team beat Saint Vincent Ferrer

High School, 3-0, on their senior night as a result of their hard work fueled by the overwhelming support of the ND community from the bleachers. The weekend after that, cheers and posters from the sidelines motivated the seniors on the cross country team to crush their PRs at their senior meet: the New York City & Sectional Championship.
Each of those moments shared something powerful: girls showing up for girls. Aside from the support that the ND community has shown for the senior athletes on their senior nights, friends, parents, and teachers have been showing up for the ND sports teams all season, supporting them during their successes and uplifting them through their challenges.
At our school, that kind of energy and support isn’t rare. It extends to all aspects of the

ND community, but that support for girls shouldn’t stop at the edge of West 13th street. Across the country, professional women athletes continue to fight for the recognition and respect they deserve. The U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team, for example, had to fight for equal pay for years, even after winning multiple World Cups. Professional women’s basketball still only receives a fraction of the media coverage and funding that men’s basketball gets. In track and field, women have broken world records, yet their achievements often get overshadowed by male athletes. These issues aren’t a result of a lack of skill or effort, it’s a result of a lack of hype.
When you watch a girl’s game at any level, you realize that the team spirit and love
for the sport is just as strong as it is in men’s sports. At our ND games, the soccer team defends the ball until the very last whistle, the volleyball team dives for impossible saves, and the cross country team runs through the pain until they reach the finish line. That energy defines women’s sports.
When the ND community fills the bleachers with support or cheers by the finish line, we model what true support for women’s athletics looks like. When girls support girls, we create an atmosphere that uplifts everyone.
The challenge is carrying that support beyond our Chez Nous community. Watch a WNBA game. Follow women athletes on social media. Buy and rep women’s professional team merch. Celebrate women’s sports milestones. Hype them up the way we hype up each other. There’s so much you can do as a woman to support other women, especially in sports, from the sidelines. Because if we, as young women, want the world to value women’s sports, it starts with us valuing it too.
