"Elegy Poem" for George Floyd

By Alais Springer '23

Floyd,

Your face lays now in a sky full of roses

But now they will only kneel before you, King

You will not be another man forgotten

You are not just a corpse

Face to the ground

You couldn’t breathe

But they couldn’t see you

It took seven minutes

Seven minutes for all of the air to escape from your lungs

For the chains you once thought were gone

To wrap around your neck, reminding you of your bondage

You begged please

You couldn’t breathe

You are as strong as a black man

A black man who cannot remove his blackness

Like a cloak, for his own protection

A black man who lived to die

A black man WHO COULDN’T BREATHE

The light you shined, as loud as a scream

And we heard you

We will fight for you, we will fight for all of you

“When civility leads to death, revolting is the only option”

By any means necessary

They will say your name

And now you will rest

And like a Phoenix

You will rise

To hear them say your name.
