Fall is Here: Celebrating the Season at Notre Dame and in the Neighborhood

By Isabella Brosnan ‘28

October is here, and our academic year at Chez Nous has kicked into full

swing. The weather is getting chilly, the leaves are changing, and classrooms are decorated with colorful faux leaves, glittery orange pumpkins, and little ghosts.

“Cool air, apple cider, and pumpkins, what’s not to love?” a student shares

excitedly “Fall is one of the best seasons for soft blankets.” says another student, Abigail Nwakanma ‘28. With the excitement of Halloween fast approaching, a few appealing events are happening at school and in the West Village neighborhood.

For instance, the Starbucks Coffee Fall Menu is highly enjoyed by students and faculty alike, whether it's a warm pumpkin spice latte sipped in the morning or a sweet apple crisp cream chai and a pumpkin loaf enjoyed after school while spending time with friends.

“Everyone loves Starbucks.” Enid Thorson ‘28 commented. Due to its proximity to the school building, Starbucks is a favorite for Notre Dame students, especially this month, which seems to be the prime time for cozy fall drinks. Starbucks also seems to be the preferred place to meet up with friends and escape the crisp, oftentimes windy morning air.

“The fall menu excites people.” shares Rylie Schultz ‘28. Another student exclaims that “fall wouldn’t be fall without a relaxing study playlist and an autumn Starbucks drink!” Starbucks is the ideal place, according to students, to get a head start on homework, listen to music, and talk to friends after school. Students also say it’s especially enjoyable with the Fall Menu!

Another favorite is the Student Council Halloween event, scheduled for

Thursday, October 31. Students are anticipating pumpkin decorating, a costume contest, and other amusing activities that have yet to be revealed. The event will take place across the street from Notre Dame, at the playground.

“I think people will be excited to compete in pumpkin decorating…It will help students connect with their classmates.” says Coco Ching ‘28, representative of Homeroom 302. “The student council is working hard to make this event fun and successful,” states Enid Thorson ‘28, representative of the Library homeroom. This event seems to spark enthusiasm in students, and will hopefully be a fun way to spend the day of Halloween!

Additionally, on October 31, there will be NYC’s 51st Annual The Village Halloween parade in Greenwich Village. It is sure to be a thrilling event for New Yorkers on All Hallows Eve.

The parade will start at seven PM, on Canal Street and 6th Avenue and go up 6th Avenue to 15th Street. According to halloween-nyc.com, the parade will include “hundreds of giant puppets, more than fifty bands representing music from around the world, dancers of all styles, artists with explosive imaginations…thousands of New Yorkers in costumes of their own creation.” If you’re not out at a haunted house, trick or treating, or at a party on the big night, the parade is sure to be a fun event.

October is the month of soft chunky knit sweaters, candy apples, and spooky thrills; Chez Nous students and faculty are embracing this month of autumn to its full extent. “I love fall. Halloween is super creative… I love the visual aspect of fall,” shares Ms. Reczek, Notre Dame’s art teacher.

Students say that the fall foliage is gorgeous and allows the city to be viewed through fresh eyes. Another student describes fall as her favorite season because “It’s just beautiful. The weather isn’t hot, but it isn't freezing. I love the food and themes that come with fall, such as pies, pumpkins, and spooky things.”

Moreover, a student says that fall “is really aesthetic…it's very cozy, and my favorite holiday is Halloween.” These events and happenings will hopefully be enjoyed as the perfect ways to celebrate Halloween for everyone at Notre Dame.
