February's New York Fashion Week initiated on Thursday, February 6 and concluded on Tuesday, February 11. While September New York Fashion Week features spring and summer looks from numerous fashion houses, February focuses on the upcoming seasons of autumn and winter.  New York Fashion week, as usual, featured many amusing moments, such as the debut of Bill Nye’s runway walk for the ninth annual Blue Jacket Runway Show that supports prostate cancer, and a nostalgic look at the nineties with the return of Calvin Klein to the runway after over five years with new designer Veronica Leoni.  The following highlighted shows were the best of the week.

Twiggy Moore:

statement pieces that mixed various bright colors and assorted textures.  The looks are dramatic, eye-catching, and almost costume-like, with fitted silhouettes at the top that widen with a bigger clothing piece towards the bottom.  The garments themselves are earthy, muted tones or vivid-colored, accented with polka dots and rather unfamiliar adornment, such as cigarette packs, perhaps a nod to the distinction between Moore’s extravagant style and general everyday objects.  The looks additionally feature varying textile pairs, such as leather bodices and tulle skirts, accompanied with fur or neon-strapped boots.  The show certainly encapsulates the New York native’s description of herself being “big, bright, and bold.”

Marc Jacobs:

In this early NYFW show titled “Courage,” Jacobs left a show note to the attendees

starting with “Guided by heart, humility and gratitude, I have come to understand that fear is not my enemy – it is a necessary companion to creativity, authenticity, integrity and life.” His message perhaps conveys that without persevering through fear and utilizing courage, he would not be able to create extravagant collections like these.  As this was actually a spring runway show, models appeared doll-like in rather billowy garments, including puffy bubble skirts and enlarged blouses. The seemingly big dresses featured large bows or were quite sizable with sequins. Models wore clown-inspired boots and heels with a pointed or heavily-rounded toe. The makeup was done by Pat McGrath, a British makeup artist, who applied bold, red, medium-sized dots in the middle of each model’s lips or on their cheeks.

Anna Sui:

Sui is an acclaimed designer in the fashion world, known for her collections exploring

the tales of hula girls, alternative girls, Mods, and more.  In this runway collection, titled “Madcap Heiress,” it seems that Sui is displaying the closet of a woman from the 1930’s who has recently inherited an abundance of money from a deceased family member. This luxurious compilation has black and muted, earthy tones with reds, greens, purples, and brown slightly contrasted with a brighter-colored garment or accessory. Most of the looks feature blazers, autumnal flowers, and belts that cinch in the silhouette with a thin circle buckle. The selection notably features current trends, such as leopard print, coats with fur trimmings, and micro bangs on the models.

Coach:

For NYFW, Coach presented a ready-to-wear collection, meaning the garments will be mass-produced and released to the public in retail, rather than being only presented in a

show to then be sent back to the fashion house. The show was inspired by the 1995 drama film Kids“ about a raw day in the life of a rebellious teen and his friend group. The runway was very Gen Z-styled with cropped graphic tees and baggy,

reworked jeans and trousers fastened with a belt that sticks out on the end. The looks were accessorized with bulky, bright-colored

sunglasses and leather flight jackets and large trench coats. A prominent detail of the runway include high pockets on short jackets that leave the wearer with their elbows jutting out, yet in a refined and cultured way. A memorable fad presented here, we are seeing currently, is light dresses over loose-fitting blue jeans.

The first New York Fashion Week of the year has showcased to viewers not only what we can expect for fall fashion this year, but also the essence of what is to come. Audiences anticipate what is coming next from these skilled and accomplished fashion houses.
