“Seas” the Day at Manhattan’s First Beach!

By: Julianna Lozito '27

New York City is full of beaches. There are The Rockaways in Queens, Coney Island in Brooklyn, Orchard Beach in the Bronx, and Midland Beach in Staten Island. However, Manhattan has never had a beach until now. Located at Hudson River Park, the borough’s first beach opened on Tuesday, October 3rd. You can find it in the Meatpacking District, opposite to the Whitney Museum between Gansevoort Street and West 12th Street. The city hopes to provide a place for people in Manhattan to soak up some sun without having to go to a different borough.

The beach is beautiful, with great views and lovely scenery. However, it lacks a place to swim. Signs near the shore warn people of dangerous currents and slippery rocks. There are also other hazards for swimming in the Hudson River, such as occasional sewer discharge. Many people are not happy about that, saying that “beaches are meant for swimming.”

“When they said that they were creating a beach in Manhattan, the vision in my mind was a lot different,” Ken Lin, 49, told the New York Times. “This is sort of like a large sandbox.”

Despite comments like these, many people enjoyed it while the weather was nice. Many New Yorkers say they like the “non-touristy vibe” and the view of the New Jersey skyline. If the beach is not for you, there is a turf area right next to the sand where you get the same experience without getting sandy.

On October 10th, I decided to check it out. The sun was out, the view was gorgeous, and there were actually places to sit. The beach was small and did resemble a sandbox. I sat under an umbrella to write this article. With the beautiful view in front of me and Sambas in the sand, it was very calm until I heard five different cars honking on the highway. Then, my peace was destroyed. Despite a few flaws, it’s a very calm place to chill out with your ND sisters.
