SIX: The Musical

By: Kaia Scholla '27

Living in New York City (or at least going to school here), we have a lot of access to the arts and experiences that many people wish they could enjoy. One of these perks is Broadway and the shows that make our Theatre District so famous. Recently, my family and I went to see SIX: The Musical. Afterwards, I became obsessed with listening to the cast recording. SIX: The Musical is based on the six wives of King Henry VIII and all that they went through during their marriage to him.

The queens are portrayed as modern-day pop stars and all have distinct colors and outfits that are unlike what you would imagine these 16th Century Tudor queens to be dressed as! The show highlights each queen as she sings about her experience with Henry and all the troubles and hardships she endured.

The dramatic action starts as a competition between the women based upon whoever had to go through the most with Henry wins. The music through the show is insanely catchy and fun to listen to.  In many ways, it sounds more like a pop concert rather than musical theater.

As each queen sings about her story, they all realize by the end that they no longer want to only be portrayed only as one of Henry’s wives, Instead, each yearns to be seen as their own person in history with their own stories. They realize that it does not matter who went through the most pain and heartache. Instead, they  recognize that each of them went through hardships with him and respect their bond. They unite against him together by choosing to no longer only be seen as part of his saga and effectively turn the tables by being the main characters of their individual narratives.

SIX: the Musical is a great show and perfect for anyone, even for those who might not consider themselves theater lovers. The show is unlike anything else currently on (and off) Broadway. Doing an excellent job of teaching about independence and feminism, this powerful musical will leave you jumping out of your seat as you sing along to the songs. It is a must-see for anyone interested in learning more about parts of history and will leave you powerfully stunned by the amazing performances!
