With the excitement of 2024 coming to an end, one of the undoubtedly most memorable events of this year was the 2024 Summer Olympics. Everyone, young and old,
were entranced by the strength and drive of our athletes. The Olympics were held in none other than Paris, the City of Love. The Olympics are a universal event that occurs every couple years, which makes it all the more relevant and special to add to the highlights of this year. This year, the inclusion of new sports and the overall talent of the Olympics left everyone shook and speechless.
Women in Sports
Throughout the history of sports, the amount of female athletes participating in large
competitions such as the Olympics have never equaled the number of male athletes.
However, history was made this summer as this was the first Olympics in history to gain full gender parity on the playing field, meaning that there were an equal number of male and female athletes participating. Although this was not recognized by most, this inclusivity made the Olympics even more special as it promotes female roles in sports. Sports have always been male dominant, and this shift encourages young female athletes to pursue what they love and chase their athletic dreams. It also encourages gender inclusivity amongst all fields of work, in everyday life, and in education. Although gender inclusivity took place in the Olympics, its message on equality will shine everywhere.
Breakdancing in the Olympics
Including a variety of sports in the Olympics is important for representing and appreciating the world’s athletics. However, the Olympics are excluding breakdancing in
the 2028 Summer Olympics due to the elementary performance given by some of the athletes. Although removing an event from the Olympics is often upsetting, this sport will not necessarily be missed, considering all of the memes floating around. As many have seen, there is a viral meme of a competitor known as Raygun, breakdancing in a way that doesn’t even seem like it would qualify for the Olympics. Having all these memes and backlash, the Olympics has wisely decided to remove breakdancing from the games, at least for now. This means that the 2024 Olympics were the first, and last, time we will be seeing breakdancing for a while.
Just Another Win for the USA
The United States, as no surprise, received the most medals in the Olympics this year.
It is easy to get caught in the beauty of the Olympics and lose count of how many gold medals the United States has won. The United States topped the medal podium with 40 gold, 44 silver, and 42 bronze medals, totaling 126 overall medals and leaving no close competitors. This added to the United States's whopping total of 2,793 medals in the Olympics’ history. This consists of 1,117 gold, 884 silver, and 792 bronze medals. Go USA!
