The True Meaning of Christmas: Giving Back this Season

By Isabella Brosnan ‘28

The holiday season is a wonderful time, full of pretty decorations, joyful music, candy

canes, and sometimes even snow flurries. However, the season has turned into a very materialistic one, from kids and teens making very long, expensive Christmas lists, to adults yelling at each other in stores.

It’s important for Christians to honor and celebrate the true meaning of Christmas, which is the birth of Jesus. Many people don’t think about why we celebrate Christmas in the first place, that it’s not all about the gifts, which can lead to selfishness. Although gifts are nice, Christmas is also about the spirit of giving, gratitude, and spending time with

loved ones. During this season, let’s try to give to those less fortunate than ourselves.

We should all recognize that Christmas isn’t all about the presents. Instead of only thinking about what you want to receive, think about what you can give to others. As author Janice Maeditere once said, “Christmas is not as much about opening our presents as opening our hearts.”

So, this Christmas season, open your heart, and find ways to remember the true meaning of Christmas and bring joy to others. The little things often count just as much as big charity acts. Donate winter clothes, contribute to a food drive, give blankets to animal or homeless shelters, bring holiday baked treats to a neighbor, provide books to a library, smile at people outside, offer to help your parents do chores, hold the door for others… The options are limitless. Have a Merry Christmas!
