2021 Elections that Made History

By Schona Dhawan '25

On the evening of November 2nd, 2021, political candidates of color made history. Diversity reigned in several states, as well as in cities, across America. Boston elected its first woman and person of color to be mayor, Michelle Wu. In New York City, Eric Adams was made the second Black man to hold the position. Additionally, Alvin Bragg was made Manhattan’s first Black district attorney. Aside from Boston and New York City, many other people of color changed the history of several other states and cities across the country, in this recent election.

Michelle Wu, the mayor-elect of Boston, has now made history as the first person of color and woman to be appointed. Wu’s accomplishments in the election are a big deal for other women and for people of color who can see representation of their communities in

government. In Boston, for the last 199 years, have elected white, male mayors, meaning Wu's position is historically significant. She plans on implementing policies on climate change, rent control, rent stabilization, and many more overlooked issues. Michelle Wu is one of the many people who made history on November 2nd, and hopes to make changes for the future.

Eric Adams, a former police department captain, has been elected as New York City’s second Black mayor. According to the Gothamist website, Adams stated, “I am you. For a young man from south Jamaica Queens that grew up with all the challenges that New Yorkers face, it is not just a victory over adversity, it is a vindication of faith.” The mayor-elect promises to combat gun violence, ensure public safety, and promote the efficiency of

the city’s police force. Many citizens support Mayor-elect Adams and his efforts to keep his promises and improve many aspects of New York City. Nationwide, people of color will be honored for the groundbreaking changes and efforts made to change the course of history in America, our country that is not yet perfect but keeps striving toward its ideals.
