A Life-Changing Donation for Medical Students

By Sienna Estrella

If you are planning on going to medical school in the future, then this announcement of free tuition is great news. It was announced on February 26, 2024, that the tuition of students who attended the Albert Einstein College of Medicine will be entirely covered going forward, thank to 93-year-old widow of a Wall Street financier, Ruth Gottesman, who donated $1 billion dollars to the Bronx medical school, covering all future tuition. So if you are interested in going to a medical school, this generous gift towards the Albert Einstein Medical School is life changing.

Dr. Gottesman used to be a professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where she studied learning disabilities. Dr. Gottesman started as director of psycho education services in 1968, and she has been on Einstein board of trustees, now as chair, for a long time. Her late husband, David Gottesman, was taught by Warren Buffett and made an investment in Buffet's company, Berkshire Hathaway.

The reason this donation is so significant because the Bronx is not only New York City's poorest borough, but also recorded as the unhealthiest county of New York. This donation is huge and it encourages students to keep progressing through their medical school years, especially those with financial struggles. Not only will this gift help students graduate debt free, but it will also help increase the number of students who complete medical school and pursue health careers.

Dr. Ruth Gottesman hopes for new doctors to enter their careers debt free and for the student body to include more people in poverty and more people who previously could not afford medical school.

This charitable donation is life-changing for current students at the

Albert Einstein College of Medicine and is inspiring for future pursuers in the health industry. This gift is encouraging for students to keep on pushing through their careers in medical school, especially those who are struggling financially since medical school is so expensive.

This is a good reminder to keep on pursuing your dreams and careers. Just like Albert Einstein said, “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.”
