Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl - The New Olivia Rodrigo Song That Is Relatable and Inspiring

By: Kaia Scholla '27

By now everyone knows the infamous Olivia Rodrigo, the young singer who became an instant star at the release of her first album, SOUR. Rodrigo released GUTS, a little more than a month ago, and it has since become an immediate success. Many people have their different opinions on what is the

best song in this album. However, “ballad of a homeschooled girl” is hands down the best one as it is completely different from the other songs in this album and songs in SOUR. GUTS has a predominantly 90’s grunge meets pop-punk, almost riot grrrl sound, with powerful lyrics that touch upon anxiety, feeling left out, being estranged from people your age, and social awkwardness, as well as insecurity. The lyrics in this song are extremely relatable and feel like Rodrigo has jumped out of your device and is singing to you personally with the lyrics: “And I don’t think I get along with anyone / blood runnin’ cold / I’m on the outside of the greatest inside joke,'' Rodrigo sings with a sort of reminiscence only an angsty teenager would be able to conjure.

A couple lines after, the song jumps into a sudden burst of pop-punk that shows Rodrigo’s frustration with her awkwardness; “I broke a glass, I tripped and fell / I told secrets I shouldn't tell / I stumbled over all my words / I made it weird, I made it worse / each time I step outside / it’s social suicide.” You’d be lying if you said you’ve never felt this way. Rodrigo’s lyrics are witty and vulnerable while capturing her audience from the very first line. This relatable song speaks to people of all ages, and talks to those who have felt anxious, insecure, or isolated by those around them. Personally, I have never been a fan of Olivia Rodrigo’s music and had a distaste towards SOUR when it first came out. However, GUTS has proved she is an extremely talented artist that deserves all the attention she gets. If you have not yet listened to this song or album, it should be your top priority. It is an inspiring and powerful piece of art that speaks to anyone that has ever felt stuck in their current situation. Especially, “ballad of a homeschooled girl” is full of emotion, relatable lyrics, and a catchy beat that makes it impossible not to love.
