From the Big Stage to the Small Screen

By Anna Verveniotis '24

I close my eyes and picture it. I see the lights dim and hear the crowd getting louder. The first notes of the first song blast throughout the stadium, and the singer is visible on the stage. The adrenaline rushes through my body. I open my eyes and that feeling is gone. Replacing it is the sight of people walking six feet apart and wearing masks to cover their mouths and noses. I hear the news reporting all the new updates on COVID-19. How did things change so quickly?

With the global pandemic stopping large gatherings from happening, the entertainment industry is at a loss. Concerts used to be a way for people to come together and embrace their love of music while having a lot of fun at the same time. That was the case up until March of 2020. Nonetheless, the pandemic has not stopped music fans from wanting to support their favorite artists.

In the beginning of quarantine, there were television specials honoring frontline workers. Musicians would broadcast live from the comfort of their homes, giving fans a different perspective on their favorite performers. It really brought everyone together, even if we were physically apart. Months later, artists are still hosting online concerts and some donate the money they make to charities that are suffering financial loss during these difficult times. Simultaneously, fans get to enjoy their favorite artists perform the songs they love.

Across the world, innovators are imagining new ideas on how to create safe, socially-distanced concerts. There have been multiple music award shows in America that were filmed outdoors, where a small number of people were allowed to drive their cars in and view the performances from their vehicles. In the UK, a music festival took place where each small group of family members or friends would be confined to a small section of land. Is this the future of live music?

No one knows what the future holds, but what this pandemic has taught us is that we are resilient. Now when I close my eyes, I can still hear the music, I can still feel the excitement but it’s not coming from the stage -- it’s coming from my laptop.
