Halloween in NYC 101

By: Anna Verveniotis '24

The Halloween spirit has officially taken over the Big Apple! Carved pumpkins and fake cobwebs have been plastered all throughout the West Village. In our own school, homerooms are preparing for the pumpkin decorating contest and celebration. However, these are not the only events spooking NYC.

Returning for its 49th year, the Village Halloween parade is going to haunt the streets of Lower Manhattan. On October 31st, the general public is invited to show off their spectacular costumes in celebration of this special night. Starting at Canal Street and 6th Avenue, the parade makes its way up to West 15th street, which is just a couple blocks away from our school! Anyone is welcome to walk in the parade as long as they arrive at the starting spot in costume before 7 p.m. This year’s theme is “Freedom,” in hopes to have everyone express themselves as they wish! If you’re too spooked to be there in person, it will be live streamed on the parade’s website. Another reason to celebrate this year is that it is the first year that it will be led by all women. The Village parade is a perfect way to wrap up the Halloween season!

Calling all ice cream lovers! The Museum of Ice Cream has been turned into a Halloween wonderland for the whole month of October. After purchasing a ticket, you can enjoy sweet games, including guessing the gelato flavor, or go on a scavenger hunt for candy. If you want to flex your sweet tooth, candy corn popsicles and endless ice cream flavors will be available at your fingertips. This museum is located at 558 Broadway and is just a quick train ride away from school.

For those who are like me and wait until the last minute to get a Halloween costume, Spirit Halloween is now open in our neighborhood. Located on 6th Avenue between 20th and 21st street, this one-stop shop for anything costume related is just a short walk away. From cat ears to Minion onesies, it’s impossible to go in and not find a costume that you love!

This is the only day of the year when it’s okay to ring someone’s bell asking for candy! So, make sure you take full advantage of that! Happy Halloween, Notre Dame!
