Music's Biggest Night, Even in a Pandemic

By Genna Cottingham '23

The 63rd annual Grammy Awards took place on March 14th in the LA Staples Center. All nominees sat at their own small table and were allowed to bring one guest. Most of the artists nominated attended the awards ceremony. However, some decided to make an acceptance speech via video call or send in a pre-recorded performance. All guests, crew, and press wore masks, some even gloves, until they stepped on stage to receive or announce an award or perform.

Some new artists went home with their first ever Grammy Award including Harry Styles for Best Pop Solo Performance and Megan Thee Stallion for Best New Artist and Best Rap Performance. A plenty of experienced artists received many more awards including Billie Eilish winning 2 on top of her 5 awards she received last year as a brand new artist. Taylor Swift won Album of the Year for Folklore and now has received 11 Grammy Awards in the past decade. To top it all off, that night Beyoncé became the most awarded female artist in Grammy history. Her song Black Parade crowned Queen B with her 28th Grammy award!

Not everyone who deserved an award this year got nominated, however this negativity is not a new problem. The Weeknd’s hit song Blinding Lights was the biggest song of 2020 but he has never won a Grammy or been nominated. The sad truth is that he is not the only one. There are tons of very popular artists in the world that are not getting the recognition they deserve. Another underrated artist is Zayn Malik, former star of the popular boy band One Direction. Since he left the band in 2015 he has had 5 number one hits, 8 top ten hits, and had yet to receive a nomination for his unbelievable accomplishments. There is speculation that the Recording Academy has been responsible for racism in the past and nothing has changed. Hopefully, in the coming years, award shows will become more inclusive of popular artists that deserve the awards solely based on talent and admiration. Until then, always remember to support artists that promote positivity and kindness in their lyrics that are made into music you love.
