NYC's Greatest Parks and Gardens

By Ave Doster '22

As we’re entering the Fall season and colder weather in full force along comes the changing trees, new outfits, and new beautiful scenery. Luckily, New York City has many locations where we can experience the vibrant colors of the Autumn season, especially our hundreds of public parks and community gardens. Whether it be attending community

based events, having a picnic with your friends, or just taking a stroll through the park on a cool, sunny day, we have many options to visit these places before it gets too cold!

Prospect Park, adjacent to Park Slope, Brooklyn, has some of the best scenery in all of the parks our diverse city has to offer. It includes a zoo, sports fields, hiking trails, and more. There are plenty of attractions to visit inside the park and surrounding areas! It neighbors the Brooklyn Museum and the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. Central Park, a similarly popular location, also has many similar attractions. The Central Park Zoo, the Belvedere Castle, and the Strawberry Fields are all beautiful sites. You can make a visit to the boathouse and take a ride in a canoe on one of the park's many lakes.

Inwood Hill Park, located at the tip of Manhattan and accessible by the 1 train, is one of my personal favorite locations throughout the boroughs. Surrounded by the Hudson River, Inwood is a very secluded park. It feels as if you’re in upstate NY and away from the bustling city. This park is a great way to experience life outside the city while not even leaving town.

In addition to many of NYC’s public parks, community gardens are an awesome place to find some nature in our city streets. Across the five boroughs, there are 550 community gardens open to the public. Some gardens hold public events for the different seasons and holidays. There are many opportunities to volunteer and help your local community members with gardening and maintenance. Do some research and find your local community garden!
