Preparation of Upcoming Xavier Plays

By: Kaitlyn Owens '25

As the sound of joy and laughter fills the magnificent theater, the voice of the director screaming “Let's run that again” creates seriousness in the faces of the actors and actresses. The theater is considered a place where students can express themselves through their personal love of acting. At Notre Dame, many students get involved in the productions at Xavier High School, which takes a lot of dedication and commitment in order to have a successful performance. Julius Caesar will be the first play of the school year performed by students from Notre Dame, Xavier, and Dominican Academy.

Ms. Nicole DiMarco and Ms. Lisa Hickman dedicated an enormous amount of effort toward directing the play. This ensures a warm and welcoming acting atmosphere for the students. Many actors and actresses believe that committing their time to the Xavier play has enhanced their high school experience. “Doing Xavier theater has been a great professional and enjoyable experience because of the skilled and dedicated directors that help produce the plays,” Oonagh Yaged ‘25 stated. The theater has taught many students helpful skills they can use beyond their life at Notre Dame. “The Xavier play has taught me a lot about drama and acting techniques, which are super fun and allow me to always look forward to each rehearsal,” expressed Anne Marie Clores ‘25.

The productions also allowed students to make new friends that share the same love for acting as they do. “ Being a part of Xavier’s productions has provided me with amazing opportunities to meet new people and learn acting skills from professional actresses,” Yaged stated. Theater provides a safe environment to open up to each other and find themselves in the process for all students. Learning acting skills helps build courage, confidence, and communication skills to use later in the real world. According to the American Alliance for Theater and Education, many students have been shown to score higher on standardized tests because of their drama background. The second Xavier play of the year will be The Mousetrap, which will be performed from December 9th to December 11th. The Mousetrap is a murder mystery play including themes of insanity and revenge.

Both Julius Caesar and The Mousetrap have taken an enormous amount of dedication and effort from the actors, actresses, and directors of the plays. The Drama Departments have truly allowed the students of the many schools to succeed and have prepared them to do their very best for both performances. Julius Caesar performed on October 28th, and keep an eye out for The Mousetrap, which will perform in Xavier’s Keenan Commons on December 9th, 10th, and 11th!
