The Passion Behind the Scenes

By Camila Torres '26 and Daphne Tsarnas '26

The Notre Dame student body brought the energy during the incredible What Is

Black showcase last month. The cast, which was composed of underclassmen and upperclassmen, drew inspiration from the history of hip-hop to perform dances and poems for students and parents. The production was also a collaborative effort that

involved members besides the dancers; a group of Chez Nous artists designed the vivid costumes and Grand Wizzard Theodore shared some insights regarding his experience as a DJing forefather.

In an interview we asked a student who performed in the showcase, Reagan Sullivan (‘25), what her favorite part of

participating in What Is Black was. Reagan stated, “I would say my favorite memory is being in rehearsals and working together to create sections of choreography. We did lots of collaboration for the show and made sure to highlight special skills and moves dancers had.” Months of work went into this show as our students worked tirelessly before and after school to make this showcase what it was.

The sense of community could truly be felt as ND students and parents gathered to watch the show and towards the end everyone broke out into a dance party! Reagan also

highlighted, “Whenever someone had a solo, we were cheering them on and all felt such pride when it all came together! We couldn’t have done it without Cai who inspired us all to put our all into this show!” Cai-Alexis Williams-Lovell (‘25) was a huge reason the passion of the students was able to shine through. Without her dedication, the songs and dances performed could not have been the success that they were.

The show, a passion project in itself, reflects the dedication of students to showcase the diversity at Notre Dame that truly makes this school Chez Nous.
