The Wait Arises for Upcoming Musical Adaptations

The thrill is rising for several new upcoming musical adaptations starring celebrities known for their outstanding works on Broadway and in Hollywood. A popular teenage drama released in 2004, Mean Girls, was later created as a Broadway show. Now, the Mean Girls Broadway musical is being released as a film featuring Renée Rapp as Regina George, once again playing the character that she played on stage. Mean Girls: The Musical, also features actors: Angourie Rice as Cady Heron, Avantika Vandanapu as Karen Smith, Bebe Wood as Gretchen Weiners, Auli’i Cravalho as Janis Ian, Christopher Briney as Aaron Samuels, and Jacquel Spivey as Damian Hubbard. The cast also includes returning actors from the original film such as Tina Fey playing Ms. Norbury and Tim Meadows as Principal Duvall. Mean Girls: The Musical, plans to release on January 12, 2024 in theaters, so don’t miss out.


Another well-known Broadway show, Wicked, is also becoming a major motion picture. However, the filming has been paused due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, as the actors’ union is still trying to negotiate better protection and compensation for its members. The production is directed by Jon M. Chu and the cast consists of Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Adriana Grande as Glinda, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, and other talented actors. Wicked is set to release Wicked: Part 1 on November 27, 2024 and Wicked: Part 2 on November 26, 2025.


A notable novel, The Color Purple, previously became a Broadway show. Now, a new film version of the musical is being released. The cast consists of Halle Bailey, Fantasia Barrino, Danielle Brooks, Corey Hawkins, Colman Domingo, Taraji P. Henson, Ciara, and H.E.R. Written by Alice Walker, the original book was published in 1982 and won many awards as a successful literary work. This upcoming December 25th, The Color Purple will be released, and you can add this movie to your bucket list.
