What to Watch During Quarantine

By Ave Doster '22

Spending more time at home than most of us ever have before can be boring and exhausting. One way that I have tried to entertain myself is by watching movies! Here I have compiled a list of 5 movies and short films that are great options to watch in the safety of our homes. These are all movies I have watched during quarantine that have really stuck with me personally, and I felt like they truly widened my view of the world. Enjoy!

20th Century Women is a movie starring some amazing actors: Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig, and Lucas Jade Zimmerman. It explores themes of feminism, adolescence and motherhood through the lense of a teenage boy growing up in the 1970s. 15 year-old Jamie is learning to navigate his own mindset and boyhood as he grows up witnessing the unique struggles of the many women he has grown up surrounded by. This is one of my favorite movies because of how boldly it approaches really heavy and complex problems faced by women both in the 1970s and in 2021. (Available on Netflix).

The Danish Girl is a movie I heavily recommend, especially if you are interested in learning about LGBTQ+ history around the world! It is a story partially inspired by Danish, transgender painter, Lili Elbe, who underwent one of the first sex-reassignment surgeries. This movie is incredibly captivating as it tells her story and follows her struggles as she is transitioning in 1920s Copenhagen. The Danish Girl is available on Netflix and is very worth checking out!

Cosmos Laundromat is a 12 minute animated short film about a very depressed sheep that felt like life was not worth living -- until he found guidance, and a friend. It appears to be the first part of a longer series, so I am looking forward to its continuation. The visuals in this short are absolutely beautiful -- the animation is incredibly realistic yet lively and colorful! You will find yourself curiously taken aback by the unique and abstract storytelling that you will notice in just these few minutes. It is one of many beautiful and interesting, short animated films that are available now on Netflix!

Uncle Frank, starring Sophia Lillis, is a funny and captivating coming-of-age movie about a young girl and her rare friendship with her kind yet mysterious uncle. This movie explores the themes of self-discovery, the hardships of family, and the struggles of the LGBTQ+ community. Uncle Frank is both hilarious, yet emotional with fantastic acting and storytelling. (Available on Amazon Prime).

Ma Vie de Courgette or My Life as a Zucchini, is an originally French, stop-motion animated movie made for kids. It is about a very young boy navigating his healing after the death of his mother as he is adjusting to living in a foster home. In this film you will witness a heart-wrenching story about childhood, loss, love and trust that can be viewed and appreciated by all ages.
