Should Students Be Able To Use AI in The Classroom?

By Imogen Miller '26

Many people believe that as our world and technology evolve, we should adapt the way we teach and learn as well. Most schools find ways to work around Artificial Intelligence resources like Chat GPT, but what if we found ways for students and teachers to work with them? Could it be possible for teachers to find ways for students to use these new platforms not for cheating but for learning and growing? Let’s take a deeper look into the pro’s and con’s of AI.

One of the key advantages of using Artificial Intelligence in academics is the technology's ability to personalize learning experiences and meet the needs of each student. Chat GPT has the capability to allow “quizzing.” Students are able to ask AI to quiz them on specific material they are learning without giving them an answer off the bat. In this way, AI can foster learning, doing more than simply providing answers. Resources such as Grammarly are platforms that check one's work and give grammar suggestions and corrections, again relying on the student to make the final decision. However, many schools are still hesitant to allow the use of Artificial Intelligence to interfere with the learning process and curriculum, the thought being that if not carefully monitored and regulated, students can use these resources as a crutch instead of a useful tool that expands students’ work. There is a valid apprehension about widespread dependency on AI, which could lead to a reduction in critical thinking and undermine the effectiveness of learning in the classroom. A balance between the benefits and limitations of Artificial Intelligence in academics is crucial to ensure that technology enhances, rather than hinders, the educational experience for all students.
